Science Says Presents: Dr. Rebecca Swenson

Dr. Rebecca Swenson visited UC Davis to give a talk on “The Science of Science Communication: Applying Communication Researchers’ Greatest Hits.” Dr. Swenson is an Associate Professor of Agricultural, Food, and Natural Resource Communication at the University of Minnesota. Her work centers around how topics and debates related to agriculture, food, and the environment are discussed in the media, by organizations, and in the community. Dr.

Science Policy Career Panel

On October 24th, the SSSPG (Science Says Science Policy Group) hosted a captivating career panel featuring seasoned professionals from the science policy realm. Our distinguished panelists, Dr. Colin Murphy, Dr. Naomi Ondrasek, and Ms. Jennifer Gilbert, all hail from the local Davis area and bring with them a wealth of experience in diverse policy areas, ranging from transportation and waste management to education.

The Second Annual Science Art Contest

Science Says is excited to present the second annual science art contest in conjunction with our sponsors: the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain and the UC Davis Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute. Submissions open January 3 and close January 31. Voting will take place February 2-16, with winners announced February 23.

What counts as art? Photography, crafts, paintings, microscopy...get creative!

Science Says is excited to announce the launch of our new writing and workshopping group: NeuWrite Davis! This new group plans to host regular meetings to workshop/give feedback on each others’ broad-audience writing, discuss science communication tools and techniques, and share our writing through blog posts or other media. We invite scientists and writers from a range of domains and levels of expertise, from any aspect of the UC Davis community to join. Join our first event on December 8, 7-8:30pm!

And the Winner Is...

In January, we hosted our very first science art contest! We had three categories contestants could choose from based on their location: Davis/Sacramento, California, or out-of-state (honorable mention only). We received incredible submissions to all categories, and are excited to announce the winners!

 

Davis/Sacramento:

Jayce Taylor won our local Davis/Sacramento category with her embroidery piece of a forgotten petri dish (we’ve all been there!).
